Cultivating Peace at Home
The world is a heavy place right now, everyone is wondering what they can do to improve things. How can you help spread peace and calm within your family and community?
If world peace starts at home, what can you do to help?
There are many ways to support humanitarian aid. Find a trusted organization and volunteer or donate as you can. Staying informed is important, however, involving oneself in endless news cycles causes increased anxiety and worry. Here are some ways to nurture the peace within your own home to provide a calm space for your loved ones and retain your vital energy.
Make sure that the ways in which you interact with your home are loving and peaceful. Do you have an overstuffed drawer that causes you to fight with it every time you open it? It is time to eliminate unnecessary clutter so that you aren't struggling with anything in your environment. I often find fighting energy in my client’s overstuffed closets, drawers, and near the entryway. Keep these areas especially neat so that your daily interactions with your home are peaceful.
If you have cabinet or room doors that clash with each other when both are open, that increases feelings of confrontation in your home. These are called fighting doors, and it is a tough situation. In my home, there is a closet door that clashes with a bathroom door when both are open, and there is no possibility of installing pocket doors, or flipping the direction either door opens. What can you do if you have a similar situation? Acknowledge that this situation isn't ideal, and choose to open the doors with love instead of frustration. Always make sure that one door is fully closed before opening the other so that they never clash into each other.
This next tip involves cultivating peace within - journal your delights. Every night right before bed, write down what delighted you during the day. With this practice, you become more aware of what brings you joy, and you magnify those situations in your life. In the moment of enjoying a delight - you are fully present and that is where the real magic takes place. Inviting yourself to live in the present moment brings more acceptance and satisfaction. I even developed Delight Journals for my clients. Give it try!
